              Thanks & Friendship---Kobe Marathon 2015

The Kobe Marathon is, of course, about running for oneself. But more than just that, it seeks to be about running for people. At the core of this concept is a desire to make the Kobe Marathon into an event for expressing gratitude to the people and regions, local and overseas, who reached out to Hyogo and Kobe right from the recovery from the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake and on up to the present day. The attitude of Hyogo and Kobe, which achieved a creative recovery, and the work providing the experience and lessons of the earthquake to disaster victims all over the world are based on the fact that we are all linked together and the conviction that we all share in joy and sadness.
The desire to make this an event where visitors to Hyogo and Kobe encounter the utmost hospitality is also based on the awareness that we are all linked together. The idea is to turn this into a marathon where runners are not just participating for themselves but for victims of disaster both in Japan and abroad. We want to make this an event that is not just about running but also about enjoying the attractions of Hyogo and Kobe.
Our intention is to make this an event that turns the power of the Kobe Marathon into something even greater and reaches out to the people and regions in Japan and overseas who have suffered terrible loss and damage in natural disasters.

This is a message of the Kobe Marathon Operation Committee.

610,000 people gave their vocal support for the route according to the operation committee, and 128 groups of 2,700 people appeared for the assistants’ event. It was here that actress Norika Fujiwara, one person who supported this event, gave a message. She was born in Nishinomiya City in Hyogo in 1971. Just after the great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 she was thirsty on the way home from work on foot and worrying about her family but at that time she was offered water by a  stranger. Moreover, when she was walking for a while, she saw people who sold water at a high price. She says that at that time it was a chance to consider the connection with people, the importance of life, cooperation and various things. Norika begun professional  actress activity in March 1995 playing an active part of dramas and commercials with domestic and abroad. On the side she also did volunteer activities, working with an NPO that supports disaster hit areas. Norika wants to raise yellow gloves at the starting ceremony along with the runners of the marathon, and she wants to convey her feelings of “Thanks” to the many people who supported us during the reconstruction.

Now, as for the results of the Kobe Marathon 2015:

Men’s victory: Tadashi Suzuki; Suzuki Hamamatsu athletes club: 2 hours, 18 minutes, 01 second.

Women’s victory: Yui Sugiya; Kobe Gakuin Univ.; 2 hours, 42 minutes, 01 second.

20,000 ran run through Kobe city with smiles, and the event was successfully completed.

RE: Syrian refugees: I understand there are practical concerns that must be balanced with what is morally correct. The concept of strangers occurs frequently in the Bible and I would like to put down some of my notes on what the Bible says in relation to strangers.

Notable refugees in the bible: Esther & Ruth

Leviticus 19:33-34
'When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. 'The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 24:22
'There shall be one standard for you; it shall be for the stranger as well as the native, for I am the LORD your God.'"

Leviticus 25:6
'All of you shall have the sabbath products of the land for food; yourself, and your male and female slaves, and your hired man and your foreign resident, those who live as aliens with you.

Leviticus 25:35
'Now in case a countryman of yours becomes poor and his means with regard to you falter, then you are to sustain him, like a stranger or a sojourner, that he may live with you.

Deuteronomy 10:18-19
"He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. "So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

Psalm 146:9
The LORD protects the strangers; He supports the fatherless and the widow, But He thwarts the way of the wicked.

Zechariah 7:10
and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.'

Malachi 3:5
"Then I will draw near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against those who swear falsely, and against those who oppress the wage earner in his wages, the widow and the orphan, and those who turn aside the alien and do not fear Me," says the LORD of hosts.

Matthew 25:35-46
'For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.' "Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink?

'And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 'When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' "The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.' "Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.' "Then they themselves also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?' "Then He will answer them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.' "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Hebrews 13:2
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.

3 John 1:5
Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the brethren, and especially when they are strangers;
